Anyway, Saturday was a day of remembrance... Started with a large crowd and ended the day with 5. First hog we got on was long winded in a thick THICK briar thicket. He ran for at least an hour and for some reason my favorite bay dog, Tanner, just dropped off my tracker... turns out she ran the hog straight into the run and must have kept him bayed in the middle of the Tombigbee for at least an hour and a half. Needless to say, the water drained her of any and all energy. The next bay was a quick and pretty easy one. It took both bulldogs, but we got him down...
Our last catch was the most eventful... We emptied the dog box. I mean we weren't really planning on catching anything else, so why not? Bad idea. Dogs bayed and it was on!! 200 yards in the dogs bayed a decent boar with teeth about the size of the one pictured above. I was going back for a bulldog when someone released him for me. If any of you have paid attention to my love of my dog you'll know that that upset me a bit, but it is what it is. He CANNOT swim. They were bayed in the middle of a chest deep slew. Of course he caught and so I had to go in. I made it about halfway and an asthma attack took over me. There was no bottom to this slew. The more you walked, the deeper you sunk into the mud. It was hard walking anyway because there were logs and who knows what else under that nasty water. There was nothing I could do but hit my knees and try to catch my breath. About that time a random dog came up behind me and stepped on my legs... scared me to death!! I thought he was an alligator or something. Henry had the hog. Charlie came to me and I was trying to hold him up, but still hadn't caught my breath. I ABSOLUTELY HATE HANDING HIM OFF TO SOMEONE ELSE. This time I didn't have a choice. Henry got scared for me and turned the hog loose. I got scared cause there was a loose hog in the slew with us. Anyway, the hog ended up being killed and Henry came to me. He took Charlie from me, handed him off to someone else, and he helped me back out to dry land. Little did I know that WHOEVER had taken Charlie off had stuck him under the water to make him turn loose. You talk about a mad wet hen?? Yeah, that was me!
Anyway, the split group of us caught two more, but I don't know the stories behind them...
Here are our group pics :)
And then there are these pics.... I'm a little concerned about us....
Sunday (Mother's Day) was pretty calm. We ended up with 4. Simple easy bays and quick too!
Some may call us old dumb hicks, but we don't care. We have good clean fun and feed our families (as well as many others) in the process.
